MRS. SMILEY

My dentist is great at taking care of people’s teeth, but he doesn’t seem to know too much about anything else. When he finishes with me, he sends me over to the little window to see the receptionist. The poor thing has to search through all these file drawers to find my records—give me a break! Does he still think it’s 1936 or something? Hasn’t he ever heard of hanging organizers? God knows, he’s got hundreds of patients. He needs to get some of those dividers for first letters of last names. I mean, the poor lady almost mistook me for another patient with a similar last name. Mine is Smalley and she almost charged me for a Mrs. Pat SMILEY. (She has her next appointment on Thursday afternoon—I checked!) Think of the time his receptionist would save if they could get one of those nice, compact shelves and keep all the patient files right there in view. And while we’re on the subject, he could use some more entertainment magazines in his little waiting room. All he has to look at are dental journals and old-fashioned women’s publications such as Redbook and Family Circle. Now, maybe “Mrs. Pat Smiley” might enjoy thumbing through those while she waits for her root canal prep, but not THIS liberated woman!

ALL THE EQUIPMENT

I think when it comes down to it you have to have alarm security and also surveillance security. This is a much easier thing to do now days, as camera equipment has come way down, and you can now monitor things from a great distance due to the web. I asked the various companies that we had bidding for security at the plant to add cameras into their bids. Most already had, as they figured that most companies would want that. At home Deb thought that we should install cameras, so that when we are away we could monitor and see for ourselves what is going on in the house. I had no objections, and agreed that we should look into companies that provide that type of coverage. When I checked online I found that it is a big market, and that it would cost much less than I thought, as price on so many electronic things have come way down. A while ago we had installed an alarm system for all the doors and windows, but thought that adding a camera would be a good idea. So now we have cameras pointed at both doors and the side of the house. It makes us feel a little safer.

FOOTBALL GAMES

My brother Jake has become a totally new man. It all started when he flew out to see this specialist doctor to get Lasik in Dallas. Lasik surgery, I mean. You know that laser eye surgery? After he got that, Jake no longer had to wear those thick coke bottle glasses of his everywhere. He got this new, sharp looking haircut. One of those short haircuts where the hair isn’t spiked, but it’s made to look all messy and still needs a lot of gel to stay in place. His acne finally cleared up after years and years and he’s dressing differently, collared shirts and nice slacks. I feel like I don’t even know him anymore. He’s even going out with a different girl every other day. It’s unbelievable. I remember back in high school he could never muster up that kind of courage. He just kept to himself and never went to any of the formals or football games or homecoming or anything. I don’t ever even remember him having a girlfriend. And now he has at least 6 or 7 of them that I know about. I’m willing to believe he has at least 3 or 4 more that I don’t know about.

WHEN I GROW UP

I never really thought about it when I was younger, but now that I’m almost through with school I have to decide what I want to be. A couple of my friends are going into law to become personal injury lawyers, but I don’t know if that’s for me. My parents would love for me to sign up to take the physical for the police department and then take whatever psychological tests and fill out whatever paperwork I have to to get into the police academy. I’m almost certain that isn’t for me regardless of the steady pay. A couple of people have suggested I become a teacher, but I don’t really want to stand up in front of people all the time, trying to drill something into their heads when they’d rather be outside playing or running errands. I majored in communications at college, but I’m not sure what kind of job that’s supposed to get me. What does a communications expert do and what sort of company does he work for? I worked as a bartender all through school so I never had time to do an internship since I had bills to pay and as much as I would have liked to intern somewhere I couldn’t do it for free. What am I supposed to do now? I just have to make up my mind and act on it.

RUNNING SHOES

The numbers on your monitor will help aid you to make a decision when it is time to get out your running shoes and run through the morning mist and jog around the neighborhood. The numbers will help you determine if you can skip that evening swim. They will relate information to help you decide if you can enjoy the same meal as everyone else during the holidays and special moments or if it is advisable to hold off on certain kinds of foods. If you know where your sugar stands then you can easily take control of your life by adjusting your lifestyle and diet and not let it take control of you. You need a great monitor to help you out with your blood testing. Since you will be testing yourself so often it is pertinent to mention that there are various types of blood glucose monitors. Some are like vehicles and help you in every way, while others are like the little motor scooters, which move, serve a purpose but do not have any other frills attached. The One Touch is the most common one out there. But, Bayer's is strong with many physicians too. Some types will record an internal log, and other can connect to your computer to send an email to your physician. But, you can get the scooter ones and even some more comprehensive monitors for free from your physician. You need testing strips for the monitors: you do not want to reuse an old strip as it will give you a false reading and harm your testing progress. If cost is an issue for you then you should know about the programs from Medicare, which can help, you close the gap in your payments for those testing strips.

LITTLE LEAGUE

The first Little League game of the season! And wasn’t I excited—probably at least as excited as my son was. The first thing I noticed when I got to the ball park was that Coach Nicholson didn’t look the same. He had coached my two older sons in Little League as well, and it had been a good four years since my fourteen-year-old’s last game. I hadn’t seen him in that long, so it was something of a surprise when I noticed that his hair looked different. It wasn’t exactly white, it was—blonde!!!!! Afterwards, I went up to him, and after we both agreed that Billy tried his best, I asked Coach if he had dyed his hair. “Oh, no, Stu,” he said, laughing. “I went bald right after Mike left Little League. Last year I couldn’t handle it anymore, and I got a hair loss treatment. This woman who does electrolysis recommended it to me and, along with this convenient little toupee, I was able to reconstruct my hair—this time the color I wanted it to be.” “You didn’t like it brown?” “Not as much,” Coach Nicholson confessed. “When I was a kid, I always wanted to be blonde. Well, now I’ve made a childhood dream come true.” Billy had been paying close attention to the conversation up until this point, but then he got bored and ran off to horse around with some of his teammates.

SPORTS IDEAS

Exercisers spend millions of dollars on special sports drinks, even though none increase endurance more than the food from which they are made. Here’s some simple information so you can tell the difference between sports drinks and determine their benefits in terms of providing enough energy or hydration to prevent cramps. When you're not exercising, don't get in the habit of using sports drinks or any other sugared drinks to quench thirst. Look for sports drinks containing the maximum number nutrients including minerals, vitamins, amino acids and other nutrients beneficial for nutrition in sports and overall health including Ginseng, Green Tea and Taurine.

In sports nutrition we look at the nutrients, like proteins, carbohydrates, fats vitamins, minerals and waters as teammates who work and play together as a team to carry the day in victory. Indeed, unless antioxidant enhanced sports nutrition (with glyconutrients) are used to offset the increased free radical burden, the BODY will suffer as a result of intensive sports training, stress, and competition. However, when glyconutritional sports nutrition was NOT used, the damaging effects of the free radical burden appeared to remain in the body for about five days.

One important fact that you should appreciate in sports nutrition is that just because you do not feel hungry, does not necessarily mean that your body has all the nutrients it needs. However, with the sports drink market so competitive and with many new ‘players’ it’s sometimes hard to tell one from the other.

I may not understand the fascination with playing a sports game or watching it on TV over playing it in real life, but it’s still good. Within the last 15 years we have seen the sports cards and collectibles market fall from grace only to rise again to it’s current form.

One sports collectable that some may not consider a sports card but has always been a fascination to me is the 1952 and 53 Dixie Cup lids. My first recollections of sports card collecting were in the early 50's when baseball was a major part of my life. When it comes to sports, Indianapolis has developed a strong presence with two professional teams, and the development of major amateur sports complexes. Nowadays there isn’t such a huge market for sports cards but about 5o years ago, that was all the hype. Now it seems only the few devoted people are still collecting but at the same time, the cards are worth a lot more now, so I guess it all balances out in the long run.
